Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the InfoVis Contest?
With the Discovery Exhibition we are trying a new concept that replaces the previous InfoVis contest. The contest had only a very low number of contributions in the last years and we hope that the new exhibition format will allow more people to submit to create a complimentary and interesting part for the IEEE InfoVis conference.
Isn't the submission exactly like a poster?
No. In contrast to a poster we are not looking for scientific contributions or work-in-progress submissions. We are looking for examples of information visualizations in use within their expected domain and with real users. Previously, there has never been a dedicated submission category for such reports.
Who should submit?
We are looking for people who have had a chance to see their tools or systems move from their research lab into accepted practice in real world work environments. Both industry practitioners as well as researchers are encouraged to submit.
Are you suggesting that visualization researchers don't apply their work to real-world environments?
Not at all! As a matter of fact, there is a lot of research work done with domain experts and in real-world domains. However, typically this collaboration and its impact is not the focus of research papers (the technical challenges, algorithms, systems are). We want to give it a more prominent place here.
Can I submit work that is simultaneously submitted to InfoVis/Vis/VAST if it is a different paper?
Yes, if the focus of the paper is sufficiently different. It would not be acceptable to submit a cut/paste version of a conference paper to the Discovery Exhibition. However, if your discovery story is not in the paper, that's acceptable. If you are unsure, please contact the exhibition chairs.
Can I submit a discovery story about a study of tool use if I didn’t create the tool?
Yes. For example, if you work with scientists and studied them using a commercial visualization or something they built for themselves AND you have interesting usage and insight stories to tell, you can certainly submit.
Can I submit previously published work?
You can write about a tool that has been previously published (by you or someone else). However, we are interested in the impact of the tool and the discoveries and insights it has generated in use and less about the design of the tool. Most likely this information is not included in previous papers.
You should not copy and paste information from previous papers into a Discovery Exhibition paper.
